Pagājušā gadsimta trīsdesmitajos gados Rīga bija eleganta un mierīga Eiropas pilsēta, kurā patvērumu rada gan Krievijas revolūcijas izdzītie aristokrāti un inteliģence, gan hitleriskās Vācijas vajātie ebreji. Bet Padomju Savienība un Vācija sāka Eiropas pārdali. Bija vajadzīgs tikai gads, lai satriektu drupās Latvijas un katra cilvēka dzīvi.
Franču valodas skolotāja Riva Šefere, jurists Aleksandrs Bergmanis, mūzikas skolotāja Gabriela Paraša, kinozinātniece Valentīna Freimane un vēsturnieks, muzeja ”Ebreji Latvijā” izveidotājs Marģers Vetermanis ir tikai daži no gandrīz 30 tūkstošiem Latvijas ebreju, kas tika ieslodzīti Rīgas geto – ar dzeloņstieplēm nožogotā teritorijā Maskavas forštatē.

In the 1930s, Riga was an elegant and peaceful European city, a sanctuary to aristocrats and intellectuals driven out of Russia by the revolution, and to Jews, persecuted by Hitler’s Germany. Soon the Soviet Union and Germany began to divide Europe. It took only one year to bring the life of Latvia and its people to ruin with the Soviet occupation in the summer of 1940 and the downfall of the country. The deportations to Siberia, the German occupation and the Holocaust all followed in 1941.
The documentary Ghetto Stories. Riga is the story of the German occupation of Latvia and one of Rīga’s major 20th century historical tragedies, which will be remembered by the people of Rīga forever. French teacher Riva Šefere, lawyer Aleksandrs Bergmanis, music teacher Gabriela Paraša, film historian Valentīna Freimane and historian and founder of the museum “Jews in Latvia” Marģers Vetermanis, are just a few of the 30000 Latvian jews who were imprisoned in the Riga Ghetto. These are eyewitness memories of the holocaust that need to be told.
